Children's Story #1

Story:

Books the House Elf and The Purple Present

A story about Patience

Tomorrow was Books’ Birthday. He was very excited, and became even more excited when he saw his mother bring out his present

He ran to it happily, but his mother stopped him. She told him to open it tomorrow.

“But Mom!” Books cried. “I want to open it now!” His mother shook his head. “You need to be patient.”

Books frowned. “What’s patient?” “Patience.” his mother replied “Is waiting for things that you want. If you have patience, the thing you waited for is even better.”

Books didn’t want to wait. So when his mother wasn’t looking, he sneaked downstairs and unwrapped the present. Inside the box was a shiny purple bicycle helmet.

Books was mad. He went to his room and cried. He had asked for a toy or a book or a game, but he got a bike helmet instead. Then Books’ mother came into the room and asked what was wrong.

Books sat up, teary-eyed. “I looked at my present. And it was a bike helmet! I wanted a toy or a game, not a helmet!” His mother smiled and gave him a hug. “That wasn’t your present Books, it was part of it.” Books rubbed the tears out of his eyes.

“Part of it?” Books asked. His mom smiled. “Your present is a bicycle. It is in the garage. If you would have waited until tomorrow, you would get to see it. You ruined the surprise. If you would have waited, the surprise would have been better.”

Books sat quiet for awhile then smiled. “So that’s what being patient means!”
